What To Expect When You’re Expecting, the film adaptation of the popular book by author Heidi Murkoff.

What To Expect When You’re Expecting is not your typical chick-flick. It’s a film I would actually watch with my husband, one I think he would rather enjoy.

I was one of the lucky media personalities who were invited to watch a private and advanced screening of the film adaptation of the popular book What To Expect When You’e Expecting by author Heidi Murkoff Wednesday evening at Varsity Cinema at the Manulife Centre.

My plus one, a girlfriend I’ve known for 15 years now, and I went down together to the event which was sponsored by FIRST RESPONSE, the leader in women’s at home diagnostic tests in Canada. The event was also hosted by Dr. David Greenberg (aka Dr. Dave), a family doctor and obstetrician with over twenty years experience.

Murkoff says her What to Expect books are like a mom’s best friend, something that’s always there for you, no matter how bumpy things get. The film adaptation is no different from that and takes a look into all the different aspects of getting pregnant and having children. After having two children myself, I know how difficult it can be to bring a child into this world. Yes it’s supposed to be a beautiful time, and anyone blessed with the miracle of being pregnant should be extremely grateful. But it can be quite frustrating. No one tells you about the things you don’t want to look forward to but should expect like swollen feet, backaches, water retention, heartburn, bloating, having to pee every five minutes, and the list goes on.

Pregnancy can take it’s toll on you, no one said it would be easy, but we do it because we want a family, because from the minute you find out you’re carrying a baby, that you and your significant other have created a life together – well, there’s absolutely nothing you won’t do to protect that innocent baby, nothing you won’t do to keep him/her safe from harm’s way.

Elizabeth Bank’s character says it best: “Pregnancy sucks. Making a human being is really hard!” But as every mom or mom-to-be will tell you, every pregnancy is different, every woman is different. Some may breeze through the nine months without so much as a little heartburn, others may get it all.

The film What to Expect When You’re Expecting examines all the scenarios – a couple who has been trying for two years to get pregnant but can’t until they finally relax and stop trying, a young woman who after an unexpected rendezvous finds herself pregnant, and another couple who have been told they cannot conceive decide to try adoption. It also delves into how things don’t always go as planned with your birthing plan, as well as, the complications of having a c-section.

The film is full of quirky liners, hilarious antics, comedic acting and just some really funny moments. Chris Rock will crack you up in no-time and is absolutely amazing in this all-star cast, which also includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid and more.

What To Expect also tugs on your heartstrings, dealing with the ups and downs of pregnancy, like how to cope with the aftermath of having suffered a miscarriage. It’s something no one dreams of happening to them, but it does happen.

So, get ready for a barrel of laughs and a few moments of non-stop tears as you get to know the five couples and soon-to-be parents in What To Expect When You’re Expecting. And whether you’re planning on watching this movie with the girls or your man, remember to bring a few extra tissues.

What To Expect When You’re Expecting also stars Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Ben Falcone, Rodrigo Sanatoria, Joe Manganiello, Rob Huebel, Thomas Lennon, Amir Talai, Rebel Wilson, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
